1. The four Pillars
Hey guys and welcome to my first real post. Today I'd like to talk about the "four pillars" of Welton Society, the school in Dead Poets Society. What are the four pillars?
The four pillars are the four major values of Welton Academy, the boarding school that our characters attend. The four pillars are: Honor, tradition, discipline and exellence. They are fundamental for the school's high level. The pillars are probably comparable to guiding principles even if they are much stricter than at normal schools. At Welton Academy, the four pillars are so important that they are presented and celebrated at the beginning of every new semester.Ok, now that you know about the pillars, I'd like to tell you what I think about them.
If I'm honest, I don't like schools like Welton that put excellence and discipline into the center of everything. Cause I believe, that life is to short for not having fun and learning things you'll never need. I like dreaming, reaching for the stars and reaching your own goals, which are important for you. I feel like Welton has another idea of success than I have. Especially. if you compare the pillars to our schools "Leitbild", as you would call it in German, which are also some kind of guiding principles. Our guiding principles are more about shaping a good environment to ensure a good education for every student as well as respect and a school without racism. Some of these principles are:
- We see a comprehensive education as the foundation of lifelong learning.
- We treat each other with respect, tolerance and trust.
- We want to create an open and vivid school together.
- Performance and effort of every single student are requirements for a democratic society.
- ...
To put it in a nutshell, I'd say that Welton Academy's four pillars are very strict and more like rules compared to the principles at my school.
What do you think about that?? Comment down below!!
